There'll Be Sad Songs

Psalm 89, 96, 100, 101 & 107

Ps 96 “Sing to the LORD a new song,
Sing to the LORD all the earth”
Ps 100 “Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth”

Joyful singing and shouting.
Everyone!

Redeemed, delivered, gathered.

And then Psalm 107 talks a lot about danger and desert and trackless wasteland.  About God delivering his people.  About people crying out to God in darkness and distress.  About reversing plenty to scarcity and then scarcity back to abundance.

Psalm 89 repeats God’s love and faithfulness over and over again.  Praising God and then it mourns the sharp break between God and His anointed.

I wonder what it would be like to sing and lead worship with these songs and in these times.
It is so much easier to sing and join a chorus of thanks and to sing praise.

All these songs so stark and different about such highs and lows.  Feeling at one moment like the apple of His eye and at another moment like the object of His wrath.  Abundance and abandonment.   Real songs about real events and about real emotion.

Songs that ask how long?  And why? These songs of a tired people filled with regret.  These songs of people who trail in the wake of disaster.  People with tears in their eyes and questions on their lips.

Through thick and thin.
He gives and takes a way.
Can we still sing: Blessed be the name of the LORD?
On the road marked with suffering?

What will it take on that day to lift our eyes from our path and lift them to the hills?

And yet these are the songs of people who still gather at the river.
These people who keep right on crying out in the dark.
These people who hold on to all their hope and all their trust in God who remembers His covenant and His promises.

These songs of a people who are trickling back from captivity back to everything they lost.  Singing songs of better days.  Because it is still “He who made us, and we are His; We are His people, the sheep of His pasture.” (Ps 100:3)  And as His people, we know the sound of His Voice.

I love that today!
