Rather Tragic.

Judges 9

Gideon had 70 sons and in his life-time there was 40 years of peace and he died at a good, old age. 

Ch 8: 33 “No sooner had Gideon died than the Israelites prostituted themselves to the Baals. 34They did not remember the LORD their God who had rescued them from the hands of all their enemies on every side. 35 They also failed to show kindness to the family of Gideon.”

The unkindest was one of Gideon’s own sons, Abimelech, who established himself as a city king by hiring a group of mercenaries and putting to death all his brothers.  These deaths were his coronation sacrifice to Baal and he was reviving Baal worship in the nation. 

Purchased allegiance is not strong.  Treachery defeated by deception.  In the end Abimelech suffered the greatest shame a warrior could suffer….  He died at the hands of a woman.  His skull fractured by a millstone dropped from a tower.   A domestic implement, like a tent peg.

What makes a good leader? 

What makes a good follower?  

In these very violent stories it seems that a charismatic personality can easily engage the people.  Israel seems easily led and persuaded.   But central to the book of Judges is the LORD’s rule.   Gideon pursued this with his whole heart and with his whole soul, but not in a reckless way.   He was not fueled by the adoration of people and when the people wanted to make him their leader, he rejected the offer, insisting that it would be the LORD who would rule over them. 

God can use anyone with a willing heart and a willing spirit. 

Whose identity is wrapped up tight in how God sees them.

I think that can be easier to say than to live.

Simple, steadfast faithfulness and obedience.

One small step at a time.

Where the rubber hits the road.

On days when we don’t feel like we have rest on any side.

God calling ordinary people to follow where He leads.  

Because He is a great leader.
