1 Samuel 17 to 20, Psalm 59
Enter David.
Ch 16:18 “A son of Jesse of Bethlehem
Who knows how to play the harp.
He is a brave man and a warrior.
He speaks well.
He is a fine looking man and….the LORD is with him.”
Saul really liked David.
And made him one of his armor bearers.
Ch 16:23 “Whenever the sprit from God came upon Saul
David would take his harp and play.
Then relief would come to Saul.
He would feel better
And the evil Spirit would leave him. “
Saul is so wide open.
Given to opposite extremes.
So fully embracing whatever Spirit is upon him.
Allowing it to full consume him
Without holding back.
He does not temper his actions
Or hold back any part of his heart.
Full exposed.
Whole hearted.
Contrast with David
Who also live his life wholeheartedly.
With his whole heart and soul and mind and Spirit.
He loved God
With everything he had
And it showed.
And Saul was drawn to the kind of man David was.
David was visiting his brothers when Saul first noticed
him.
Both David and Saul were the sum of their words.
Their actions and thoughts and words drawing a composite
of their character.
We see such different men emerge as the story progresses.
Saul’s fear and jealousy and paranoia grew.
God’s favour for David was so obvious that Saul noticed
it over and over, obsessing.
And it came between them.
While it drew David and Jonathan together.
David just a small man with a large heart
Who would tolerate no one who insulted God’s Name.
A wholehearted way of living that manifests itself in his
work ethic and the value he places on relationships.
In Psalm 59 we get a sense of the depth of his creative
soul.
Seeking God fully
Trusting in God and not in princes or principalities.
Depending on God’s strength
To defend God’s honour
And it fuels his campaign
To topple the giant Goliath.
Two champions
Who go head to head
In the valley between the army camps.
