Psalm 121

1” I lift up my eyes to the mountains—

    where does my help come from?

2 My help comes from the Lord,

    the Maker of heaven and earth.

3 He will not let your foot slip—

    he who watches over you will not slumber;

4 indeed, he who watches over Israel

    will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 The Lord watches over you—

    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;

6 the sun will not harm you by day,

    nor the moon by night.

7 The Lord will keep you from all harm—

    he will watch over your life;

8 the Lord will watch over your coming and going

    both now and forevermore.”

“As the mountains surround Jerusalem,

So the LORD surrounds His People

Both now and forevermore.”

Continually.

Both today and tomorrow and the day after that….

These are the songs from David the survivor and the heir-apparent.

These are songs from the other side.

Songs of “I made it”,

Of being rescued and freed

Of going through the hard and the deep places

With God by his side.

The songs that pilgrims sing as refrains and choruses together in unison and as duets.

Recounting the stories and the promises as they travel to the temple in Jerusalem to bring and make sacrifice and give thanks.  

Recounting these stories of heroism and obedience and of God’s faithfulness and deliverance.

Telling and reminding each other

That this God of the Psalmist

Is their God too.

Walking, talking, traveling, journeying together.

I always love the together part.
