1 Samuel 2 & 3
The calling of Samuel seems such a remarkable story. He is 12-ish years old when he first hears
God say his name out loud. He sees his
mom once a year when she brings him a new little robe. I’m always struck by the image of this little
boy living in the temple 24/7; living, serving, resting. Living side by side with Eli. And with Hophni and Phinehas. He literally “grew up in the presence of the
LORD.” (Ch 2:21)
During this time a prophet came to rebuke Eli for the conduct of his sons, and for his lack of discipline. And he speaks judgement over the house of Eli; much heartbreak, blinding tears, dying.
This little boy, “who was growing in stature and in favor
with the LORD and with men” (Ch 2:26) has to bring the Words of God’s judgment
to Eli about his sons. Eli hungry for a
Word from the LORD. Any Word. Ch 3:1 “In
those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions.” But Eli submitted to God’s Words. “He is the LORD; let Him do what is good in
His eyes.” (Ch 3:18)
Ch 3: 19 “The LORD was with Samuel as he grew up, and he
let none of his words fall to the ground.”
I love those words and the picture of that kind of
listening to God speaking. Every word
something precious to behold, not dropping a single crumb.
Has anyone every listened to you like that? With absolute focus and undivided
attention? Listening with both eyes and
with both ears. Electronic devices
firmly switched off?
Do I listen to God’s Word that way? With my whole heart and my whole mind and my
whole soul? I would love to say
yes. But often my mind is already racing
far ahead of me into my day. Occupied by
all the things I have to do and my heart anxious about the weather. It is hard to drop it all and turn it off
and focus solely on God and His Word.
But this pencil and this paper.
It helps me listen better.
With empty hands.
While it is still dark.
